Chaos on OMR: Massive Fire Erupts at Tech Mahindra Warehouse in Chennai

A major fire incident recently sent shockwaves through Chennai’s prominent IT corridor, Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), when a massive blaze broke out at a warehouse within the Tech Mahindra campus. Located inside the Tamil Nadu Electronics Corporation (ELCOT) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Sholinganallur, the facility sits at the heart of a hub housing numerous IT and automobile giants.The Incident and Immediate Response.The fire erupted on an evening in mid-May 2026, with thick black smoke billowing from the godown, followed almost instantly by raging flames. The campus, which employs over 5,000 people, was immediately thrown into an emergency state. As sirens blared, thousands of IT employees were forced to evacuate the complex through alternative routes to ensure their safety.Initial attempts to contain the blaze were made by staff using on-site fire extinguishers, but the intensity of the fire quickly necessitated professional intervention

A Massive Firefighting Operation

The scale of the fire required a coordinated effort from across the city. More than 50 firefighters were deployed, with fire tenders rushing to the spot from five different stations, including Tambaram, Thiruvanmiyur, Thoraipakkam, Medavakkam, and Guindy. Support also came from the surrounding corporate community, as private firefighting vehicles from nearby companies and private water tankers were brought in to assist the Fire and Rescue Services personnel.
